Aloe Vera

Famous for its soothing and curative properties, you won’t only have an indoor plant that is nice looking, but a useful one as well: aloe vera can indeed be used against skin rashes and irritations, digestive tract problems, and to soothe itching caused by insect or mosquito bites.
Be careful to place it somewhere out of baby’s reach, as it has small spines on its leaves.

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: as a water-retaining plant, it doesn’t require much care or watering, making it perfect for busy people or for those who don’t have a green thumb!

Dracena

Dracena, also called “tronchetto della felicità” (log of happiness in italian), is an evergreen plant that survives even in shadowed areas, perfect for the indoors.

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: it only needs water when the soil is very dry; but you need to be careful in avoiding waterlogging!

Sansevieria

Sansevieria is an evergreen indoor plant, we recommend getting those that are part of the Trifasciata, Nana and Cylindrica plant families, as they are the ones who need less care.

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: not only it is an easy-care plant, but it is also highly resistant to parasites and plant diseases.

Areca

Add a tropical feel to your home with this palm tree-looking indoor plant! Coming from Madagascar, it can’t survive temperatures lower than 50°F. If taken care of properly, it can reach up to 6 feet of height, perfect for apartments with high ceilings.
Arecas are pollution fighting indoor plants, used to purify spaces from xylene, commonly found in paint and construction materials; it will make your home even safer for baby!
Beware: don’t get this plant if you have cats, as Arecas are toxic for them.

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: it doesn’t need to be watered in winter (isn’t that amazing?). Arecas are also affordable and easy to find: you can easily find one in your local IKEA.

Schlumbergera (Christmas Cactus)

Schlumbergera is a lovely indoor plant also called Christmas Cactus due to the fact that its flowers blossom between December and January. Don’t let the name scare you: its leaves are flat and it has no spines!
Its flowers, other than being good looking, are very delicate: they can fall off easily, even when the vases are moved slightly, so they might not be the best indoor plants for newbie parents with playful pets.

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: it can survive for years (up to 20-30!) if cared for properly. It should never be in spaces with temperatures lower than 50°F, far from heat sources or direct sunlight.

Lucky Bamboo

Despite its name, this indoor plant is not really a bamboo, as it’s part of the Agavaceae family. It can survive for years, and it is believed to bring happiness and prosperity — you might have seen some in restaurants or hotel receptions, near the checkouts.

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: coming from pluvial tropical forests, it doesn’t require a lot of maintenance at all.
You can grow your own from scratch by purchasing a kit online. it can also make a great sustainable gift for fellow newbie parents!

Pothos

You might have seen this particular indoor plant a lot already. Thanks to the fact that it’s easy to care for, Pothos’ are used in a lot of apartments for decorative purposes.
They thrive in luminous spaces, but far from direct sunlight.

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: it can survive both summers and winters with little to no maintenance, but it should never be kept in areas with a room temperature under 38°F (this means that it can’t be kept outdoors in colder seasons).

Aromatic Herbs

Aromatic herbs are perfect indoor plants as they don’t take much space, and can also be placed in the balcony in warmer months. It might be tempting to place them in the window sill, but this could be potentially dangerous for your baby, especially if they are tall enough to grab the vases.

Here are the best aromatic herbs to grow in your own house:

  • Mint
  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Coriander
  • Lemongrass

What makes it perfect for busy newbie parents: other than being perfect to amp up your cooking, aromatic herbs are amazing for educational purposes. Teaching your baby how to recognize the various herbs is a fun little activity to do as a family; and letting your baby help in picking the leaves is also a good sensory activity!
