5 Best Workouts to do at Home for Newbie Moms

the best workouts for newbie moms

Mommies and Daddies know just how hard it is to squeeze in a workout with a newborn baby around the house. Whether you’re pregnant, have just had your first newborn baby, or have many kids, the fact is that it only gets harder and harder to find time to work out and stay fit.

One thing many Muffin Moms have done is to make a commitment to workout during a baby’s naptime (should we create a hashtag, muffin moms?). That means that as soon as you put your baby down for their nap, you slap on those yoga pants and start a quick work out!

Here are 5 quick and effective workouts you can do during your baby or newborns naptime, with no equipment needed.

1. Jumping Rope

What makes this workout perfect for newbie parents is that it doesn’t require much space and it’s a simple yet versatile cardio at-home workout.

All you need is a jumping rope and you’re ready to go! Your baby’s hula-hoop could also be used as an alternative “jumping rope”.

Did your toddler wake up? Get your children involved! Jumping the rope together with your toddler is a fun way to stay active while spending some quality time with your loved ones. You can even get Daddy involved!

Baby’s Nap Time Time spent Jumping Rope Calories Burned
15 minutes 5 minutes 100 calories
20 minutes 10 minutes 200 calories
30 minutes 15 minutes 300 calories

That’s 20 calories per minute! What does this mean?

  • Fix those mommy buns!
  • Lose the postpartum belly.
  • Don’t skip leg day. Work those pins!
  • Look stuntin’ like the hot baby mamma that you are!

After your jumping rope session, remember to store your rope in a locked closet or out of your baby’s reach. Read more tips on how to make your home safer by baby proofing it here.

2. Yoga or Pilates

All you need for yoga or pilates is a workout mat and some comfy and stretchy clothes: it’s perfect for a quick and easy home workout!Though it is not as sweaty as jumping rope or other cardio workouts, don’t underestimate these workouts (like I did!): they’re not exactly child’s play.

The huge focus is in fact in body resistance and balance, they might seem easy but they can be quite challenging.

All of us at A Muffin in the Oven love yoga and pilates and as new moms we know that it’s important to choose the right workout that helps you get your feet wet after you come back from the hospital!

4. HIIT Workouts for Newbie Mom’s

For a more challenging yet home-friendly workout, you could opt for High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts. These workouts can get very intense. Remember to listen to your body and give time for recovery.

You don’t need any equipment for HIIT workouts, just comfy clothes and trainers!
Here are two HIIT workouts that you can begin doing right away: just do each exercise for 30 seconds with a 10-second rest between an exercise and another. Take a 1-minute pause between a set and another and start over!

Remember to stay hydrated and to sit down during your breaks for better recovery!
